Language for Global Citizenship: Plant Your Own Seeds" です。

Take a big step towards becoming a global citizen

Professor Tetsuo Takaishi

Vice-President and Head of the Institute for Advanced Education and Research

In 2018, Nagoya City University launched a new language education program. The program is called “Language for Global Citizenship: Plant Your Own Seeds.”

I am sure that everyone received a rich English education in high school. Some students may have had overseas experiences. Other students may be interested in cultures around the world. You may want to study abroad, want to engage in multicultural symbiosis in the local area, want to do international research, and want to work globally in the future. Everyone should have many dreams for the future.

One goal of language education at NCU is to help to develop a global feeling inside of each of our students. Therefore, unlike language education at other universities, we decided to offer a fully self-selective course plan. All incoming students will be able to select classes according to the effort they want to apply toward achieving their dreams. We care about your interests and awareness of global issues and have devised appropriate course contents to meet them.

For languages other than English, we have prepared a wide range of options to understand the cultures of countries and regions other than the English-speaking countries and to cultivate a rich global sensitivity. Included in our course offerings is “Sign Language (手話)”, which is an important means of communication and is also regarded as its own language.

Cooperative teachers in diverse fields, including those who are native speakers, are united in supporting your growth.

Please take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of your own language skills and global sense. Use this language program to increase those strengths and overcome any shortcomings.

As Japan is hosting the 2020 Olympic Games, the chances of encounters with foreign guests is certain to increase.

In preparation for a new era, through the language program at NCU, you will take your first, big step to becoming a global citizen.

Welcome to our program!

Louise Haynes

Vice- director, Language Center, Institute for Advanced Education and Research

As one of the foreign language team here at Nagoya City University, I’d like to welcome you to our program.

This is an exciting time for our university. We have introduced a language program that offers many more choices to our students. What languages are YOU interested in learning? What skills do YOU want to develop in English or in another language?

The NCU “Plant Your Own Seed” program will help you to reach your language goals. We offer a wide variety of courses to meet the needs and interests of the students. No matter what your major may be, we have something to pique your curiosity.

Are you interested in producing a film? Would you like to do a project to help in the community in some way? Do you want to improve your public speaking skills? How about learning how medical professionals in other countries deal with problems in their communities? How do you say “Happy Birthday” in Japanese sign language?

All of these things and more you will find in our language program. It’s really your choice. Decide what interests YOU and...

PLANT YOUR OWN SEEDS.

There are many other things here at NCU to help you reach your language learning goals. For example, there is the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC). It’s an English-only space where you can relax and talk with friends, make new friends, watch a movie, or just quietly read a book in English.

The International Exchange Center is another useful resource. There, the staff can give you information about studying abroad. Find out what you would need to prepare to have one of these adventures in another country.

We hope that your experience with learning and using all of the languages here at NCU will be an enjoyable and rewarding one.
