This course examines fandoms and communities built on the consumption of popular culture. Foodies, Marvel fans, BTS' Army and sports fans increasingly impact our media landscape as they create new ways of sharing their passions. Students will delve into these fandoms to produce an original analysis of a chosen group in an informal presentation, explaining the context of the pop culture phenomenon, speculating on its merits and shortcomings, and formulating opinions.
This course will give students the opportunity to deliver informal presentations and lead discussions in small groups, developing a strong understanding of their chosen topic and improving their ability to develop discussions by offering meaningful questions and informed opinions. While researching various media and communities, students are encouraged to consider how popular culture relates with broader societal and cultural conditions.
